ACTS 6:8-12And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and signs among the people. Stephen did great wonders. How did he do those things. Luke tells us that he was ‘full of faith and power’. We should note at this point that faith comes before power, because power can only be realised through faith. Who was Stephen? His name means ‘crowned’, metaphorically, the eternal blessedness which will be given as a prize to the genuine servants of God and Christ: the crown (a laurel wreath) which is the reward of the righteous. Stephen was one of the seven deacons of the church in Jerusalem, and by all accounts he lived up to his name and became the first Christian martyr. We learn that he was filled with the Holy Spirit, and the power that came through his faith was ability in that Holy Spirit, and thus he was feared, seized and brought before the council falsely accused of blasphemy. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: It is interesting that the chapter begins with a mention of the Sin of Murmuring — grumbling in a low undertone, muttering. The book of Numbers describes seven murmurings, expressing a discontent about all things. Essentially criticising God for whatever is before us or that we do not understand; not trusting in what God is revealing; being fearful of a new way… Now the synagogue of the freedmen found that they could not resist the wisdom and spirit by which Stephen spoke. But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons. You will be brought before kings and rulers for My name’s sake. Because of this powerful truth they became afraid and wished to crush that which they did not understand … just as Jesus had foretold. “These things I have spoken to you, that you should not be made to stumble. The Holy Spirit was speaking through Stephen even as they heard Jesus speak, and panic seized them. This heresy, this perversion of the truth they thought was truth had to be crushed or who know where it would lead … discomfort, division, disruption … just as Jesus had sown, for he said Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. So false witness was their way of discrediting Stephen, just as it had been with Jesus. If there is an unacceptable truth, the create lies and fabrications to defeat the truth. We see that is true today, just as much as it was in Jesus time on earth. It really doesn’t matter if the lie is believed or not. If you are in a position of authority and able to back the lie by sanctioning ruthless unjustifiable action, then the status quo is re-established. Now the chief priests, the elders, and all the council sought false testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, ROBIN MARK — Be Unto Your Name A CLOSING WORD from DIETRICH BONHOEFFER LISTEN TO ‘AND STEPHEN DID GREAT WONDERS’ BY CLICKING ON THE LINK BELOW… ![]()

MEDITATE ON THESE THINGS…Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you. Archives
