There is not only fear, but terrible danger, for the life unguarded by God.
[Oswald Chambers ‘Run Today’s Race’]
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. We love Him because He first loved us.
[1 John 4:18-19 NKJV]
We know that His perfect love casts out fear, but we often behave recklessly even with the knowledge of that truth. We behave as if we did not know Him, or worse, knowing Him, we act as if we are invincible because of His presence, because of that perfect love. Either way, we are failing to acknowledge His Lordship in our lives. We are throwing aside His guardianship over us - taking Him for granted.
Knowing that He who is able to keep you from falling brings peace and joy into the midst and sets us free has that tendency to let us disregard His covering, or clouds our ability to acknowledge the reality of His presence. He becomes a talisman and thus we have no meaningful relationship with Him.
Scripture repeatedly says that whenever Jesus appears, there is peace, and this is meant to show us that with Jesus residing in us – in our hearts and minds and souls – we too will be at peace, because we shall be like Him, not that we can go our own way, do our own thing and assume that He will still be there as our protector. The reality of that is that we are asking Him to be like us, rather than accept that we need to be like Him, and that only when we come to that acceptance will we be out of danger. Let Him be your vision this morning.
Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. [1 John 3:2 KJV]
Be Thou My Vision - Eden’s Bridge
That a Christian can smilingly do a smart trick is a staggering thing. Destruction of conscientiousness means we have lost the fierce purity of the Holy Ghost and taken on the pattern and print of the age.
