Bread of Heaven

The Hidden Manna

Yet He had commanded the clouds above, And opened the doors of heaven,
Had rained down manna on them to eat, And given them of the bread of heaven.
Men ate angels' food; He sent them food to the full.
[Psalm 78:23-25 NKJV]

Psalm 78 in referring to the Bread of Heaven is speaking of the Lord’s provision for the Israelites in the wilderness, which was the manna that fell from heaven. That manna is still with us to this day in the form of our Lord Jesus Christ - the Hidden Manna.

A portion of the manna was to be placed in the Ark of the Testimony and thus hidden from view to all except those who can enter the Holy of Holies.

and behind the second veil, the part of the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of All, which had the golden censer and the ark of the covenant overlaid on all sides with gold, in which were the golden pot that had the manna, Aaron's rod that budded, and the tablets of the covenant
[Hebrews 9:3-4 NKJV]

We realise that the manna hidden in the ark is Jesus, ‘the true bread of heaven in the Book of John, chapter 6, verses 32-36 ...

Then Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."
Then they said to Him, "Lord, give us this bread always."
And Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst. But I said to you that you have seen Me and yet do not believe. [NKJV]

One of the best known hymns is “Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah”, also known as “Bread of Heaven” ...

Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah,

Hold me with Thy powerful hand.
Bread of heaven,
