He Knew All Men

Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name when they saw the signs which He did.
But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men, and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man.
[John 2:23-25 NKJV]

Again the Passover feast is mentioned in chapter 2 of John’s Gospel. We now have three mentions of feasts, twice named as the Passover, which may suggest that the feast for the wedding at Cana was related to the significance of that feast. Indeed this conclusion to chapter 2 tends to sum it up in the statement that “He knew what was in man”.

We must know that Jesus Christ does not need any one of us. We need Him, even when we do not realise that this is the case. For many years I claimed to myself that I believed, but I was not fully committed to Him until I came to the end of myself and I knew of nothing that would help me. In that moment He appeared. How He did that is a story for another time, but I can testify that He knew what was in this man, me — and knew the moment of His appearing through His saints, that would bring me to His feet in submission.

He loves each one of us, but His life on earth and after, through The Holy Spirit, is dedicated to bringing us to the place of intimate relationship with God — and it can only be done through Him.

Jesus understands us. He knows who we are, why we are as we are, and what we need to transcend who we are. He understands because He lived the life we know; that there be no barrier between man and God. He came to show us that truth — that through His life, we may know and understand God ... and live with Him at the right hand of God forevermore.

The comedienne, Hylda Baker, had a catchphrase that has always stayed with me. “She knows, y’ know!” That can better be applied to our Lord’s understanding of us. He knows, you know!

You will find nothing more searching than what the New Testament has to say with regard to the miserable, petty line of insisting on my rights. The Holy Ghost gives me power to forgo my rights.
