Four Riverheads

Now a river went out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it parted and became four riverheads.
The name of the first is Pishon; it is the one which skirts the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. And the gold of that land is good. Bdellium and the onyx stone are there.
The name of the second river is Gihon; it is the one which goes around the whole land of Cush.
The name of the third river is Hiddekel; it is the one which goes toward the east of Assyria.
The fourth river is the Euphrates.

On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.
He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”
But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

When we consider the four rivers described as going out of Eden to water the garden, we can be puzzled, for if Eden is the garden, then how can water flowing out of Eden be also watering Eden?

But then consider John 7:37-39 above. The act of giving life to another, also refreshes the giver. Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water, and this because he/she has already received refreshing life from Christ.

Four rivers flowed from Eden; and four represents creation - the four corners of the world; the four ancient elements (earth, air, fire, water), the four winds and so on. It also thus reveals God’s creative universal plan of redemption through Jesus Christ.

These rivers proclaim through their names the flow of divine life coming from the creative hand of Father God. Pishon and Gihon together mean ‘increase bursting forth’, while Hiddekel and Euphrates combined says ‘rapid fruitfulness’. Abundant life in the Spirit. Good Lord show us the way! Show us Your rivers of living water.
