And the LORD said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him: “Lift your eyes now and look from the place where you are—northward, southward, eastward, and westward; for all the land which you see I give to you and your descendants forever. [Genesis 13:14-15 NKJV] Lift your eyes - look to the heavens, not down to the earth at your feet. As a boy, my mother would regularly tell me to look up, “You’ll not see where you are going by staring at your feet!” Her reason was perhaps one of how it looked to others; a child always staring at the pavement looks miserable and uninterested, but mainly there was an encouragement to “look where you are going.” I was always afraid that I would trip over a badly placed paving slab (a distinct possibility in 1950’s Lanarkshire); but the downside was the likelihood of walking into a lamp-post. 60 years on, I still have to tell myself to “look where you are going.” The Lord says look from the place where you are ... surely that is the heart of our faith. Don’t fret about what is now, do not worry about where you are going, or what is happening within you in the earth which you are — look up to a wider horizon where the things of earth grow strangely dim. Where? In the light of His glory and grace as the song has it. Turn your eyes toward Jesus. Genesis reveals that The Lord said to Abram Lift your eyes now and look from the place where you are. Look in every direction to the four corners of the created world; but also to the four corners of His spirit within you. What do you see? The Lord says for all the land you see I give you. I Lift My Eyes Up Vineyard Worship If you are ignored because of faddy notions of your own, you are not on the right line, but if, because you stand true to your Lord and what He represents, you awaken antipathy, you are on the right line. |
MEDITATE ON THESE THINGS…Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you. Archives
